The Exchange and the 24 Hour Company are to announce on Monday that Ben Folds will write a 15-minute musical that is to be cast, written, rehearsed and performed in a single day as part of the fifth production of “The 24-Hour Musicals.” The process will begin the evening of April 28 and continue around the clock until a total of four planned musicals are performed at the Gramercy Theater at 8 p.m. on April 29. Other participants have yet to be announced. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale in March, and proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Orchard Project, which helps develop new theater work.

We are so excited for Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the brilliant young composing team who wrote the songs to Dr. Williams in One Night Stand. The world premiere of their new musical, Dogfight, is in previews now at the Second Stage Theatre, and officially opens on July 16.

The New York Times called it the “one new musical that does stand out” this summer.

Dogfight is based on the 1991 Warner Brothers movie of the same name, set in 1963. The plot opens with three young marines on the eve of deployment to Vietnam. They plan one final boys’ night of debauchery, centered around a cruel game. But when Corporal Eddie Birdlace (Derek Klena) meets Rose (Lindsay Mendez), an awkward and idealistic waitress, she rewrites the rules of the game and teaches him the power of compassion.

Choreographed by two-time Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli, and directed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello, this show is a must-see. We are going to see it this week!

Gina Gionfriddo, the Pulitzer-nominated scriptwriter in One Night Stand behind the bridesmaids’ tale, Rachel Said Sorry, recently premiered her latest play, Rapture, Blister, Burn, at Playwrights Horizons in New York City. The New York Times called it “intensely smart, immensely funny” and the Washington Post concurred:  “roaringly funny satire.”  Like Rachel Said Sorry, Gina’s new play explores the career-versus-family dilemma for professional women and how they negotiate their choices—this time, for the current generation of 40-somethings. Starring Amy Brenneman (Private Practice, Judging Amy) and other luminaries, the play brings the feminist debate into the internet era: “Heady with sharp-witted dialogue about the particularities of women’s experience (there’s a joke about pornography and Google maps — believe it or not — that’s worth the ticket price alone), “Rapture” more largely illuminates how hard it can be to forge both a satisfying career and a fulfilling personal life in an era that seems to demand superhuman achievement from everyone,” says The New York Times. “A One-Man Cultural Cuisinart” – that’s Gabriel Kahane, according to The New York Times. The composer of Multiphobia in One Night Stand, Gabe crosses genres as often as most New Yorkers cross streets. He unveiled a new musical, February House, at NYC’s Public Theater in May and received such a warm response that it was extended well into June and given a cast recording, directed by Ted Sperling. Also this year, Gabriel toured the country with his second pop album, “Where Are the Arms,” and made his Carnegie Hall debut as a composer and performer with the American Composers Orchestra, performing “’Crane Palimpsest,’ a sprawling song cycle that is his first work for full orchestra,” according to The New York Times. “In it, Kahane places his own lyrics alongside Hart Crane’s classic “Proem: To Brooklyn Bridge,” while the music gradually, ingeniously blurs the line between his sweetly folksy pop style and a dissonant, angular sound like Stravinsky’s or Schoenberg’s.” Congratulations, Gabriel!
